About this excursion
Your day starts with a morning pick-up from your accommodation or the nearest available meeting point. The bus takes you up towards the White Mountains and the Omalos Plateau, where you have time to get ready before entering the gorge.
The hike through Samaria Gorge is hard work. On the way down you pass high cliffs, small streams and pine forests, and you may see kri-kri, the wild goats of Crete. The gorge is around 18 km long and the walk usually takes about 6 hours, depending on your pace and the conditions.
The hike ends at Agia Roumeli, a small, isolated village between the mountains and the Libyan Sea. You have free time there to swim, rest on the beach or have lunch at a local taverna.
Afterwards you take the boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion, where the bus is waiting to take you back. On the way there is a short stop for restrooms and snacks.

The Samaria Gorge route is about 18 km, mostly downhill and flat. The walk takes about 6 hours, depending on your pace and breaks.
Is the hike suitable for children?
It is a demanding hike on rocky terrain. It can suit older children and teenagers who are used to long walks, but it is not recommended for very young children.
What should I wear and bring?
Sturdy hiking shoes, light breathable clothing, a hat, sun protection, plenty of water and energy snacks. A small backpack is recommended.
How much free time is there at the end of the hike?
After finishing the gorge at Agia Roumeli on the south coast, you have free time before the connecting boat and bus transfer back to your accommodation.
Are entrance fees included?
No. The Samaria Gorge entrance ticket and the boat ticket from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion are not included and are paid locally. The current prices are shown on the booking page.
What happens if the gorge is closed due to weather?
The gorge can be closed by the local authorities for safety reasons (heavy rain, high winds). In that case you will be informed in advance and the booking is handled according to the cancellation policy on the booking page.
